Intradiscal Biacuplasty

Intradiscal Biacuplasty

Intradiscal biacuplasty is a relatively new procedure that treats discogenic low back pain by enhancing the structural integrity of the disc. In most cases, patients will undergo discography prior to intradiscal biacuplasty to pinpoint the exact source of the pain. With low back pain being the leading cause of disability worldwide, this procedure is incredibly helpful in determining what exactly is going on and providing patients with relief. If a discography shows that the pain is indeed coming from the discs in the lower back, intradiscal biacuplasty may be a viable treatment option.

The majority of candidates for this procedure are living with extreme discogenic pain in the lower back region. This minimally-invasive procedure is often recommended because it has been proven to effectively treat this type of pain. Intradiscal biacuplasty uses water-cooled radio frequencies, which is one of its distinguishing features. With approximately 45% of all back pain being attributed to the discs, it is important to find a treatment that actually provides results. Recent reports have shown that intradiscal biacuplasty is often superior to other biacuplasty procedures when treating chronic disc herniation. While this procedure is very similar to discography in that it uses two small needles on both sides of the disc, when radiofrequency is applied to the area, it helps detect the exact source of the pain and treat it by changing nerve communications. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

Benefits of Intradiscal Biacuplasty

One of the major benefits of intradiscal biacuplasty is that it can eliminate discogenic pain, or at the very least lessen the symptoms without having to replace the discs in the lower back. Disc replacement surgery is extremely intense and often comes with a long recovery period, which is why intradiscal biacuplasty is such a great alternative. In fact, this procedure works similarly to disc replacement surgery, but has a faster recovery time and is more effective.
